A pilgrimage yatra to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gnagotri, Yamunotri

Badrinath

Badrinath, one of the main shires in the char dham yatra,  is at an altitude of 3133m. Surrounded by mountains with the Neelkanth Peak as a background, Badrinath is one of the most celebrated pilgrim centers in the country. The famous Badrinath Temple is here.

The temple opens every year in the month of April-May and closes for winters in the third week of November. Guru Adi Shankaracharya established the present temple.

Kedarnath

The next pilgrim center in char dham is Kedarnath. One of the twelve Jyothirlingas is at the Kedarnath temple located on the Kedarnath range. At an altitude of 3584 m on the head of river Mandakini, the temple is a sacred place for the Hindus. The present temple was built in 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya.

Best time to visit : May to October 

Clothing: Light woolens in summer and very heavy woolens in winter. 

How to reach

Air: Nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, 239 km.

Rail: Nearest railway station is Rishikesh, 221 km.

Road:  Kedarnath is approachable on foot, 14 km from Gaurikund, which is connected by road with Rishikesh, Kotdwar, Dehradun and other important hill stations of Garhwal and Kumaon hills. Horses, dandies and ponies are available at Gaurikund.

Helicopter Service is available from Agastya Muni to Kedarnath (Rudraprayag).

Gangotri

The shrine of Gangotri is situated at an elevation of 3048 m. It is 99 km from Uttarkashi. The shrine is located on the banks of river Bhagirathi.

Best time to visit: The weather is pleasant during day, cold at night. April to October is the season to visit the shrine. 

Clothing: Heavy woolens throughout the season. 

How to reach

Air: Nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, 17 km from Rishikesh and 265 km from Gangotri.

Rail: Nearest railhead is at Rishikesh, 248 km away.

Road:  Gangotri is connected by road with Rishikesh.

Yamunotri

The shrine of Yamunotri is situated at an elevation of about 3,235 m. On the same route to Gangotri, at Dharasu the road bifurcates, and one goes to Yamunotri and other to Gangotri. The shrine can also be visited through Mussoorie and Barkot. 

Best time to visit: In summer, the weather is pleasant during day, cold at night. April to October is the season to visit the shrine. In winters, the temperatures touch sub-zero level.

Clothing: Light woolens in summer and very heavy woolens in winter.

Air:   Nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun.

Rail:  Nearest railhead is at Rishikesh.

Road : The road to Yamunotri diverts from Dharasu bifurcation point. The distance to Yamunotri has to be covered in vehicles and treks.
