Belur, Halebidu and Sravanabelagola are located in Hassan district of Karnataka.


The Hoysalas architecture is at its best temples in Belur and Halebid near Hassan. Their architecture is ornate and intricately decorative. The temple at Belur took almost 103 years to complete.

History - Belur was the early capital of the powerful Hoysala Empire. Today it is referred as Dakshina Varanasi.


Chennakesava temple: This temple took 103 years to be completed. It is one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture. The temple was built by King Vishnuvardhana in 1114 AD.

Narasimha Pillar: This pillar used to revolve on its ball bearings.

Shantala Devi: The beautiful sculpture of Shantala Devi, Queen of King Vishnuvardhana, is placed on the circular platform in front of the shrine.


Hoysala Mahotsava: This is a dance festival that is held at the Hoysala temples in Belur and Helebid during the month of March.

Located 16 kms from Belur, Halebidu has temples and palaces that were once part of the Hoysala capital. The main temple is dedicated to Shiva.

History - Halebidu is also referred as the Gem of Indian Architecture. It was the capital of the Hoysala Empire during the 12th and 13th centuries. During the reign of Veeraballala II, the grandson of Vishnuvardhana, it reached the pinnacle of its greatness. It was conquered by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq in 1327 AD.

Location  - Halebidu is in Hassan district, 16 km east of Belur and 34 km from Hassan.

Best Time To Visit  - The best time to visit Halebid is between the months of October and February.

Sravanabelagola is a major Jain pilgrim site in Hassan district.

History - Shravanabelagola got its name from the words ‘Bel’ (means white in Kannada) and ‘Kola’ (pond). . There is a beautiful pond in the middle of the town. Shravanabelagola depicts the architectural style of Gangas of Talakad. On the Indragiri Hills is the monolith statute of Lord Gomateshwara (Bahubali), the tallest monolithic structure in the world.

Location - Shravanabelagola is 157 km away from Bangalore and 52 km from Hassan town.

Best Time To Visit - The best time to visit is between the months of October and March.

Festivals - Mahamastakabhisheka of the 17.38m high statue of Lord Gomateshwara is celebrated grandly once every 12 years.
