Raigad Fort – is a fortress situated on a hill in the modern day Raigad District of Maharashtra, India. The fort is 2700 ft above sea level, is located in the Sahyadri mountain range. There are approximately 1400–1450 steps leading to the fort, though today a rope-way exists to reach the top of the fort.

This was the capital of the kingdom of great Maratha king Shivaji during 1674.This place was later developed into the Maratha Empire. The fort was ransack and ruined by the British when it was conquered.

Reaching There

Route 1 (via Tamhini Ghat): Chandani Chowk – Paud Road – Dawadi – Bhira Top – Adarwadi – Nizampur – Via Mangaon Road Mumbai-Goa Highway – Mahad – Pachad – Raigad (There is direct road that connect after you get down Tamhini Ghat to Pachad. but it is not that good.

Route 2 (Via Varandha Ghat): Pune Satara Road (NH4) via Katraj – Bhor – Varandha Ghat – Shivtharghal – Mumbai-Goa Highway NH17 – Mahad – Pachad – Raigad

There are signboard available on NH17 for diversion to Raigad and it is 23 Km off the highway. Distance from Pune to Raigad is approx 150 Km and it takes 3-4 hrs to reach the place. “Fort Raigad is a revered place of pilgrimage, which has left an impression of the grand vision of Hindavi Swarajya as cherished by the great king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”
