Sights in Vietnam can be divided into historical sights, cultural sights and scenic sights.

Historical sights

All through the history of Vietnam it was a constant struggle against China’s dominating influence. Later it became a French colony in the late 19th century. The famous Dien Bien Phu battle continued until 1975. This war is known as the “Vietnam war”. Throughout the country there are sites that have bore the burnt of the war. Here are a few famous sights from North to South:

Dien Bien Phu: A quiet valley in North West Vietnam that witnessed the 57 day siege leading to France’s defeat.

Hanoi: The Capital City of Vietnam is marvelously laid out with parks, lakes, boulevards and parks and has a peaceful ambience. There is a mix of the old world French charm with the colonial houses, with modern high-rise buildings. The city has much to offer being a blend of traditional and modern culture. The history is replicated in its temples and architecture and the center of the city has some historic monuments.

Cổ Loa citadel: An 18km long spiral shaped fortress was built around 250 B.

Hoa Lo prison built in 1904 by the French.

Ho Chi Minh mausoleum and Ba Dinh square

Quang Tri

Hue’s forbidden walls, palaces and royal tombs have been certified as a World Culture Heritage by the UNESCO.

Hoi An was an important international seaport and trading center.

Cu Chi tunnels: a network of connected underground tunnels.

Cultural sites:

Buddhism was and is still the most popular religion in the country. Chùa Một Cột (One pillar pagoda- Hanoi), Chua Hương (Perfume Pagoda- Ha Tay), Chùa Thiên Mụ (Hue) are famous for their architecture.

Cao Dai is a religion unique to Vietnam. Cao Dai’s Holy See built between 1933 and 1955 near Tay Ninh province has unique architecture.

Scenic sights

Vietnam has two World's Natural Heritage sites: Halong Bay and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and 6 World's biosphere reserves including: Can Gio Mangrove Forest, Cat Tien, Cat Ba, Kien Giang, Red River Delta, Western Nghe An.


A short ferry ride from Halong Bay will take you to Hong Gai District.

HALONG BAY: Also known as “where the dragons descend into the sea”, the Halong Bay is a natural wonder. Sitting pretty on the Gulf of Tonkin, Halong Bay is a sight to see over 3,000 mountainous islands.

NHA TRANG: This is a place of great beaches in Vietnam and several ancient Champa sights.

HO CHI MINH CITY: Situated along the Saigon River, the Ho Chi Minh City center, which is commonly referred to as Saigon, is filled with colorful shops, international hotels, and kiosks selling croissants, while the surrounding region is covered with rice paddies.

VUNG TAU: A beach resort on the South China Sea.

Water sports

Kite surfing: Mui Ne with its beautiful beaches is quickly growing into one of the most popular kite boarding and windsurfing sights in Asia. The windy season starts around September/October and lasts until April/May.

Surfing: The best place to surf is China Beach, Da Nang.
